Team Night: Building the Foundation First

More than anything, Team Night is a reminder.

VOUS Team

At VOUS, our goal is to foster an environment designed to intentionally build a culture of honor, one that pauses often to recognize the people who faithfully build His House week in and week out.

Team Night is just one of the spaces we aim to live that out. It happens every season to realign our teams on mission, equip them for what's ahead, and refresh them in spirit. Team Night has always been a rhythm in our church, but this season carried a distinct focus: build a strong foundation before refining strategy.

Team Night Pillars

Team Night is designed around three core pillars, or words, that help us set the direction for what we want these gatherings to achieve. The goal of Team Night is to encourage, train, and connect.

We encourage servant leaders by honoring their faithfulness and reminding them their role contributes to a greater mission: bringing people who are far from God close to Him.

We train by developing practical understanding and spiritual awareness, reinforcing that what they steward isn't just a role, but a calling rooted in discipleship.

We connect by creating intentional space for teams to build deeper relationships, strengthening unity within and across departments.

More than anything, Team Night is a reminder: we don't just serve on teams, we're part of one church, one mission, one body. These moments build unity across locations, not just within teams, helping every leader see the bigger picture of what God is doing through the house.

We wrote an article that shares a look into the planning side of Team Night from structure, programming and community. Read the full article here.

The Flow of the Night

Every element of Team Night is designed with intentionality, including how we honor people's time.

  • Pre-hang — An informal space for servant leaders to arrive, connect, and enjoy a light snack prepared for them.
  • Worship — Each location followed the PCO to create a unified worship experience that centered hearts and prepared the room to receive.
  • Awards — This season included special recognition, highlighting a standout team and an individual servant leader at each location.
  • Message — A 15-minute encouragement from the Location Director, designed to commission and refocus leaders. Seating was intentionally arranged to create a more intimate, engaging environment.
  • Workshops — Leaders move into breakouts centered on culture and values rather than playbook execution.

Why We Led With Values

This season's Team Night looked different. Instead of our Team Leaders leading playbook-based sessions, we shifted to staff-led department breakouts focused on cultural workshops.

Staff were paired with partners based on their department and given a set of topics to choose from, along with templates, guidelines, and the flexibility to lead in their own voice.

Here's the why behind the shift: leaders who usually pour out need a night to be poured into. When leaders get to sit and receive, it creates margin, and margin is what lets a refreshed spirit go refresh others.

What the Workshops Reinforced

VOUS has seven core values we uphold at church and walk out in our daily lives. Leaders are meant to model behavior that other servant leaders can repeat, so that the culture extends beyond the act of serving.

The workshops were built around discussion, reflection, and real-life application. While creating connection, leaders were able to sit, receive, and walk away with something practical to pour back into their teams.

And the encouragement didn't stop at the church doors. Servant leaders were encouraged to carry these values into the world beyond Sunday. The mission of the church isn't just for staff, and it isn't just for weekends, it's an everyday way to live. Ministry isn't only what we do; it's how we live.

Our values:

  • Jesus is our message
  • People are our heart
  • Generosity is our privilege
  • Excellence is our spirit
  • Passion is our pursuit
  • Servant leadership is our identity
  • Honor is our calling

Start With Honor

If you're looking to refresh your own Team Night, don't feel pressure to build a bigger event. Start by getting clear on your purpose. Culture is built through intentional moments.

Healthy teams aren't built by better systems alone, they're built by healthy leaders. When you take the time to honor, refresh, and realign the people building your church, you're not just preparing them for another Sunday. You're strengthening the foundation of your house.
