Inside VOUS High Summer: A Season That Builds

Two intentional experiences turn summer into a season of formation.

VOUS Team

Summer looks like a pause for most students,  a break from routine, from structure, from school. At VOUS High, we've built it to be the opposite: a season where students step into deeper ownership of their faith, so they walk into a new school year already formed, not scrambling to catch up.

VOUSCon Upfront and VOUS High Camp are two intentional gatherings designed for our VOUS High Students. Neither happens by accident. Both are the product of systems we've built and refined over time, and we want to hand those systems to you.

Why Summer Matters

We’ve found that summer is when students have the most margin to actually build something. No school schedule competing for their attention, no academic pressure crowding out reflection. It's the closest thing to a training ground we get all year.

That's why we have learned to use the summer to build differently. VOUSCon Upfront and VOUS High Camp are designed to use that open margin on purpose: to give students language for their faith, practice owning it in community, and walk away with habits that don't evaporate the moment school starts. What gets built in June and July is what carries a student through the Fall semester and beyond.

Building With Intention: The Systems Behind the Moment

This may not show up in a highlight reel, but it's the part that makes everything else possible. Every strong student event is supported by a system designed to set up the team and students for a win that starts well ahead of the event itself.

Monthly Meetups

Leaders gather in the months leading into VOUSCon and VOUS High Camp, not for logistics alone, but for vision. Before anyone is assigned a role, they need to understand why the role matters. These meetups align every leader on what we're actually trying to accomplish with students, so execution flows from conviction and instruction.

Walkthroughs

Once vision is set, leaders physically walk the space before students ever arrive. They see the room, trace the flow between sessions and cabins and dining, and rehearse their positioning. A leader who has walked the space show up confident and provide support to every Servant Leader who will be serving.

Playbooks

Every leader receives a clear, written guide: call times, specific roles, where to stand, what to say, what to watch for. A playbook removes guesswork. It means a first-year Servant Leader and a five-year veteran are both operating off the same standard, and no detail gets left to memory. Find access to an example of our VOUS High Camp Operations Playbook here.

If you're building a student summer experience at your own church, this is the order we'd encourage: vision, walkthroughs, playbooks.

VOUSCon Upfront

For churches unfamiliar with it, VOUSCon is VOUS Church's annual convention, one of the largest outreaches we host all year, drawing thousands of leaders and believers into a multi-day immersive worship and Biblical teaching experience. VOUSCon is designed to deposit faith, commission the next generation of leaders, and unify the Church as we lift up the name of Jesus.

Inside VOUSCon, VOUSCon Upfront is a space built specifically for VOUS High students. Rather than being spread throughout a room of thousands, students sit together on the floor, close to the stage, surrounded by their peers and the Servant Leaders discipling them.

That proximity changes what students experience. A room of thousands can feel overwhelming. The goal is for VOUSCon Upfront to remove that. Students watch people their own age worship boldly, right beside them, and that visibility does something a sermon alone can't: it makes faith feel possible and deeply personal. Servant Leaders are positioned throughout Upfront specifically to engage in those in-between moments, before a session starts, during worship, walking out, because that's often where discipleship can happen.

Upfront is designed to be the spark. It's where students first taste momentum and relationship heading into summer, and VOUS High Camp is where that momentum gets room to deepen.

VOUS High Camp: Going Deeper

VOUS High Camp is a four-day experience built around one goal: create a spiritual getaway for students to step away from the noise, disconnect from distractions, and experience God in a real and possible way. Every block of the schedule, from sessions, cabin time, meals to free time, is placed with intention.

Here is this year’s camp schedule, as an example of how that structure comes together in practice.

The through-line worth noting: sessions, cabin time, and meals repeat in a steady rhythm all four days. That repetition is deliberate so students know what's coming next. Camp Nite, held the following Sunday after camp at our 6PM services, extends the response beyond the week itself, giving students a clear next step while the experience and encounter is still fresh.

Supporting the Structure

We divide our Servant Leaders into two functions:

Operationally This team helps create and facilitate a distraction-free environment for students to focus on what God is doing in and through them. From check-in, hospitality, environments, and everything in between.

Cabin & Care This team supports students directly, the same faces walking with the same group of students all four days, so trust has time to build daily.

Bridging the Gap

VOUSCon Upfront sparks vision. VOUS High Camp deepens relationship. Together they build momentum that's designed to carry past the summer, pointing students back to Sundays, Crews, serving, and the daily habits that keep faith from becoming seasonal.

None of it happens by accident. It happens because the systems get built first.
