Resetting the Year by Resetting the Heart

The best way to prepare for what's next is by seeking God first.

Why 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting Matters — and How We Lead It at VOUS

As the calendar turns and a new year begins, the pace of ministry rarely slows. If anything, it accelerates with the quiet weight of what’s ahead. And yet, year after year, we’re reminded of a simple truth found in Matthew 6:33 – The best way to prepare for what’s next is not by doing more but by seeking God first.

At VOUS Church, we’ve found that the most meaningful resets don’t begin with strategy or structure. They begin with posture. That’s why, every January, we commit to 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, not as a program, but as a spiritual rhythm that reorients our hearts toward God.

As Pastor Rich shared in a recent staff meeting, cultivating a willing spirit is foundational to spiritual health. A willing spirit says, “God, I’m choosing Your purpose over my preference.” Prayer and fasting create space for that posture to take root.

This article is both an invitation and a resource for pastors, ministry leaders, and churches preparing to lead their communities into a new year anchored in prayer and a deep sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.

Why Prayer and Fasting?

Prayer aligns us with God’s heart. Fasting removes the distractions that compete for our attention.

Together, they create an environment where spiritual clarity can flourish.

Throughout Scripture, prayer and fasting appear at pivotal moments. Matthew 4 gives us a picture of Jesus Himself fasting before stepping into His public ministry. Acts 14:23 tells us that Paul and Barnabas prayed and fasted before appointing leaders of the early church. These rhythms remind us that spiritual power flows from spiritual dependence.

At VOUS, we don’t view fasting as a way to earn God’s favor. Instead, we see it as a way to position ourselves to receive what He’s already eager to give— His presence, direction, renewal, discernment, and strength.

A Willing Spirit Sets the Tone

One of the most significant takeaways from Pastor Rich’s message from VOUS Church's December Staff Meeting was this: When a willing spirit and obedience come together God’s Will is released.

Often, the resistance we feel isn’t about capacity, it’s about comfort. Fasting challenges that resistance. It puts our flesh in check and gently exposes where convenience has replaced consecration and where routine has dulled hunger for God’s presence.

Prayer and fasting don’t just reset our schedules; they reset our souls.

How We Lead 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting at VOUS

We believe preparation is a form of pastoral care. From a communications and leadership standpoint, it’s essential to resource people before we rally them.

Here’s how we walk our church through 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting:

1. Preparation Begins Before January

During December, we begin introducing 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting to our church, creating awareness and anticipation. We invite our community to opt into our Prayer text group, setting the expectation that prayer will be both accessible and communal.

This early communication helps people plan spiritually and practically before the fast begins.

2. Daily Prayer Rhythms

Consistency builds trust and participation. During the 21 days, we offer multiple daily touch points so people can engage in ways that fit their schedule:

  • Morning Prayer (Monday–Friday | 6:30 AM)
Hosted online via Zoom to gather our church in prayer before the day begins.
  • Midday Prayer (Daily | 12:00 PM)
Live on Instagram for anyone to join during lunch breaks or moments of pause.
  • Prayer Room (Wednesdays | 12:00 PM)
An in-person rhythm that creates space for focused, corporate prayer.
  • VOUS Girl Prayer & VOUS Man Alive Prayer (Thursdays | 1:00 PM)
Gender-specific prayer gatherings designed to foster vulnerability, strength, and spiritual unity.
  • Pray First (Wednesdays | 7:00PM

The goal isn’t attendance, it’s availability. We want prayer to feel reachable, not overwhelming.

3. Clear Communication + Simple Systems

Throughout the 21 days, we support participation through intentional communication:

  • Daily text reminders highlighting prayer the following day
  • Monday and Friday all-church emails directing people to resources
  • A centralized landing page: vouschurch.com/prayfirst, where people can find:
    • Daily Prayer Topics
    • Why we pray and fast
    • Consecration prayer
    • Helpful resources

When people know where to go and what to expect, engagement follows. We want to lead with clarity.

4. First Fruits: Giving God Our First and Best

This season is paired with our First Fruits collection, giving God our first and best. It’s an intentional reminder that prayer and fasting are about priority, not perfection.

Giving God our first and best isn’t limited to finances. It’s about time, attention, obedience, and trust. Prayer and fasting help us realign our lives around that truth.

From 21 Days to 365 Days in the Word

While 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting helps reset our spiritual posture, we believe transformation is sustained through daily devotion. That’s why, as a church, we’re committing not only to a season but to a year of intentional formation through God’s Word.

This year, our community is walking through the Born Again Journal, a 365-day journey through Scripture designed to help believers consistently engage the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation.

The Born Again Journal is more than a reading plan, it’s a discipleship tool. It provides daily structure, Scripture prompts, and space for reflection, helping people build the habit of meeting with God daily. As we give God our first days of the year through prayer and fasting, we’re also committing our everyday to knowing Him through His Word.

For churches, this creates a powerful rhythm:

  • Prayer and fasting awaken hunger
  • The Word sustains growth
  • Daily devotion builds spiritual maturity

We’ve found that pairing a focused season like 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting with a long-term Scripture journey helps people move from inspiration to formation—encouraging not just momentary spiritual momentum, but lasting transformation.

For those interested in joining us, the Born Again Journal is available online, with more information here.

What Other Churches Can Learn From This

If you’re considering leading your church through prayer and fasting, here are a few principles that have shaped our approach:

  • Start with posture before programming
  • Over-communicate clarity, not pressure
  • Create multiple on-ramps for participation
  • Centralize resources in one clear place
  • Anchor the season in Scripture and community

You don’t need elaborate systems to lead meaningful prayer, just intentional rhythms and a shepherd’s heart.

An Invitation to Begin Again

As a new year approaches, the invitation remains the same: Return to Me.

Prayer and fasting are not about striving, they’re about surrender. They help us begin the year not rushed, not reactive, but rooted.

Whether you’re a pastor leading a congregation or a believer seeking renewal, may these 21 days be a moment where hearts soften, vision sharpens, and willingness grows.

Because when the spirit is willing, God is faithful to move.
